***THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL ARE YOUR EARS THAT YOU NEED TO TRUST AND A GREAT HOME STUDIO SETUP***
1. A computer, either a PC or a Mac. (I use a MacPro M3)
2. Software known as a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Your DAW comes equipped with everything necessary for great sounding music production. I personally work with Apple Logic Pro.
3. An audio interface. There are multiple choices available, and I use the UAD Apollo Twin X.
4. Headphones: Ensure that the headphones you select have a flat frequency response, meaning they should not boost the lower, mid, or high ends. I have three pairs for comparison: the Audiotechnica ATH-M50x, the Sony MDR-7506, and the Shure SHR840A.
5. Studio monitors are not essential, but they can significantly aid in mixing. I utilize the Yamaha HS7.
6. Instruments for recording, such as guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, and microphones, are also important music recording equipment.
7. A desk to work with is necessary. I began with a tall living room table before investing in a proper desk, so feel free to get creative with your home studio setup. You don’t need a lot of space unless you plan to record full bands with an audio interface that supports multiple inputs.
8. Sound treatment on your walls is not mandatory, but it can help manage room reverb.
9. While some engineers prefer using an external mixing console, it’s not required. If you have a UAD audio interface, it includes an on-screen virtual console that mimics a physical studio console.
10. Always be open to learning; don’t stress over topics you don’t fully grasp. Explore and have fun.
